How would my county officials know if something happened at the Pine Bluff Arsenal?
If an accident or incident happened involving the chemical stockpile, the Army would immediately go to work to contain the problem. County and state officials would quickly be notified through telephone hotlines and a specialized computer network. To increase your time to respond, the Army has an agreement with Jefferson and Grant counties to set off Tone Alert Radios and Sirens in the affected areas. County officials would decide which areas should also take protective action based on information from Army officials.
How would I know what to do if there was an incident or accident involving the chemical stockpile?
If there was an incident involving the chemical stockpile, the public would be notified through sirens, tone alert radios, the Emergency Alert System on television and radio, weather alert radios and local law enforcement. The Joint Information Center in Pine Bluff serves as an information clearing house during a chemical stockpile emergency. Army, state and local public information officers will release emergency information and updates to the public through the media. The Joint Information Center, like the reception centers, is operated with the assistance of citizen volunteers. To volunteer, call the Jefferson County OEM at 541-5470.
Who would respond if something happens involving the chemical stockpile? What kind of training do they have?
More than 2,000 emergency responders, such as paid and volunteer firefighters, police officers, sheriff deputies and emergency medical crews, have been trained to respond in the local community during a chemical emergency. Through CSEPP they have been trained to identify chemical exposure symptoms, decontaminate people and give appropriate first aid.
Where should I take my animals if I'm told to evacuate?
Animals, other than those that serve the disabled, are not allowed in shelters and reception centers. Facilities for animals will be provided near some reception centers, but space will be limited. You should try to locate friends or family to care for your pet during an emergency.
How can I learn more about the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program?
Public Information Officers at the Pine Bluff Chemical Activity, Jefferson and Grant counties and at the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management are available to give presentations and help your community understand the actions they may need to take in a chemical stockpile emergency. Please call them to schedule a presentation or to answer any question you may have.
